Accurate Reporting

Employee Internet reports are often used as the basis for sensitive personnel actions and evidence in court. In both areas, erroneous information can lead to disastrous results.  Wavecrest ensures the accuracy of its reports by using a couple of methods that will give you a clear view of employees' Internet activity.

  1. We Distinguish Visits from Hits.
Wavecrest reports show actual human click actions (‘visits’ or 'page views') separately from automatically generated extraneous hits (ads, banners, graphics, audio, etc.). “Visits” count how many Web pages a user actually requested, not all the elements downloaded as a result of those requests.
  2. We Provide Reliable Metrics.
Wavecrest reports do not measure how long a user was online, and the reason is simple. The fact that a user downloaded a Web page to a browser doesn't necessarily mean that he or she was actually looking at that page while it was "open." After all, the user could have suddenly received a phone call, gone to lunch, attended a short-notice meeting, been interrupted by a colleague, or gone to the restroom.  Also, users typically have more than one Web page "open" at a time, but only one is truly viewable.  When a computer user clicks on a URL, that action merely constitutes a one-time request for a document, and the "connection" with the server is immediately broken. There is no "session," no end-of-session, and no possibility of measuring duration.

Interactive Reporting

With Interactive reports, you can quickly drill down to get more detailed Web-use data by simply clicking on a report's elements.  It is an efficient way to get the detailed employee Internet reports that you need.  It can also save administrators and report recipients a tremendous amount of time.  It eliminates the need to log in to the product to run a detailed report on the same time frame.  Instead, an audit detail report for the same time frame can quickly be retrieved by simply clicking on a user, category, etc.  The image below illustrates how Interactive Reporting works.

1. Run a High-Level Summary Report
A Site Analysis report, for example, will show the number of Web visits that were acceptable, unacceptable, or neutral for the specified time period.  To get more detailed data on the Unacceptable visits, simply click on "Unacceptable" and an Unacceptable Visits report will run.

2. Drill Down to an Unacceptable Visits Report

The Unacceptable Visits report will show all unacceptable categories, the users, and the number of visits to each unacceptable category.  If a potential problem area is spotted, i.e., a user has an excessive number of visits, just click on the ID Name or IP address, and a User Audit Detail report will run.

3. Drill Down Further to a User Audit Detail Report

A User Audit Detail report is one of the most detailed reports Cyfin offers.  This report includes every URL that a user visited, its category, and the date and time that the user accessed the Web page.

Sample Employee Internet Reports

High-Level Activity – Click on the links below to see excerpts from our most-used high-level report, "Site Analysis." They provide a quick look into a company's overall Internet use.

  • Acceptability data: Activity totals grouped by your own “acceptability” criteria.
  • Top cateories: Activity totaled and shown in categories, e.g., News, Porn, etc.
  • Top users' visits: Most active Internet users, listed in descending order of total visits.
  • Top bandwidth users: List users consuming the most bandwidth.

Low-Level Activity – Click on the links below to see the extensive and detailed drill-down capability built into Wavecrest's reports.

  • Top Web sites: A list of domains visited most often by your users.
  • Single category analysis: All Internet visits in a single category, e.g., Sports or Porn.
  • Single user activity analysis: Breakdown of a single user's Internet visits.
  • Top bandwidth sites: A list of the domains consuming the most bandwidth.

Abuse-Detection – Based on your company's Web-use policy, you can specify how many visits are acceptable in each Web category in a 24 hour period.  If this threshold is exceeded by users, the reports will show it.  Click below to see how Wavecrest's products automatically flag instances of abuse based on your threshold criteria.

Technical Spec

Filter and monitor protocol and Web traffic with the CyBlock Appliance.

Network Configuration

Bridge (Transparent) Mode

The appliance works as an "in-line" device between your internal network and the Internet.  It acts like a bridge, allowing Internet traffic to flow transparently through it - giving it the ability to block and monitor Web sites and applications, i.e, IM, P2P, Email, etc. by users and groups.

CyBlock Appliance - Inline Configuration

Proxy Mode

In this configuration, HTTP traffic is sent to the CyBlock Appliance as proxy requests. CyBlock Appliance then determines if the request should be blocked or allowed based on your filter (block or allow) settings. In Proxy mode, the appliance is not able to block or monitor protocols, i.e., IM, P2P, Email, Streaming, etc.

Functionality and Pricing

Technical Integration and Product Administration

Q1.  What is the difference between CyBlock Appliance and CyBlock Proxy?
A1.  The main difference between the products is that CyBlock Appliance is a hardware solution that is placed "in-line" in your network and CyBlock Proxy is a software solution.   Both products filter and report on Web (HTTP) traffic; however, CyBlock Appliance also filters and monitors on protocols, i.e., IM, P2P, Email, Streaming and more.

Q2.  How does the CyBlock Appliance block protocols?
A2. When placed "in-line" in your network, the appliance sees all traffic flowing through it, including protocol traffic such as FTP or BitTorrent.  Accordingly, the CyBlock Appliance will filter protocol traffic based on the filter policies you create.  Included with every CyBlock Appliance is the CyBlock Client piece, which gathers identifiable usernames from the protocol traffic. This allows administrators to set up policies by username (not just IP address) and to see actual usernames in CyBlock Appliance's real-time Web and Protocol monitors.

Q3.   What protocols does CyBlock Appliance block?
A3. The list of protocols and applications that the appliance filters continuously grows.  Some popular protocols and applications include:  FTP, Email, Instant Messaging (AOL, Yahoo, MSN, etc), P2P File Sharing, BitTorrent, PC Anywhere, SSH and more.

Q4.  Can different filtering policies be created for different users or groups?
A4. Yes. Different Web and protocol policies can be created for groups and individual users. Administrators can customize CyBlock Appliance to fit their acceptable use policy whether they have a universal policy or multiple policies for different groups.  A VIP group is also included in the CyBlock Appliance core grouping structure, and IDs placed in this group will not show up on any reports. By default, this group is assigned "Allow All" filtering policies (but that, too, is completely configurable).

Q5.  How is CyBlock Appliance priced, i.e., is it subscription-based, priced "per seat," etc.?
A5. CyBlock Appliance is a licensed, subscription-based hardware product.  Pricing is tiered, based on the number of people ("non-concurrent users") to be monitored.  Get a price quote and more information about the CyBlock Appliance today.

Q6.  Does CyBlock Appliance come with a warranty?
A6.  Yes.  CyBlock Appliance is under warranty for the first year from the shipping date.  The warranty covers manufacturing defects and hardware failure.  After the first year, you can choose to renew the warranty with our Quick Replacement plan.

Q7.  What is your return policy?
A7. Wavecrest Computing offers a 30-day satisfaction guarantee from the shipping date on its hardware products.  If you return the product within 30 days, a credit or a refund of the purchase price paid (less shipping and handling and any applicable restocking fees) will be given.  Any product returned to Wavecrest Computing without prior authorization from Wavecrest Computing will be considered an unauthorized return, and you will not receive credit for the product.

Q8.  Where does the CyBlock Appliance fit into my network?
A8. Ideally, the CyBlock Appliance is designed to fit "in-line" in your network, behind your firewall or Internet connection.  In this location, it transparently sees all traffic passing through it and can filter protocol and HTTP Web traffic.  Alternatively, the appliance can also be set up like another computer on your network almost anywhere, becoming an HTTP Web proxy at that location (it cannot block protocols in that scenario).   Read more about CyBlock Appliance's network configuration.

Q9.  What logging, monitoring and filtering features come with the CyBlock Appliance?
A9. The CyBlock Appliance can log both HTTP Web traffic and protocol traffic to separate files off-box.  An installation of Cyfin Reporter is included with the appliance to handle reporting duties.  The appliance interface has a Web Monitor and a Protocol Monitor, so administrators can view "real-time" traffic, and both may be used simultaneously. The appliance can monitor and filter HTTP Web traffic, Web content types (file extensions, etc) and specific applications and protocols (such as Instant Messaging, P2P File Sharing, Email, etc).

Q10.  Can CyBlock Appliance be remotely administered?
A10. Yes.  It can be administered from a separate, remotely-located client computer using CyBlock's browser interface.

Q11.  How current are your URL list updates and protocol updates?
A11. The URL and protocol list is updated every day by our list technicians and is 100% human reviewed.  You can either schedule a daily list download or download the list manually.

Q12.  Does the CyBlock Appliance act as a firewall?
A12.  No.  The CyBlock Appliance is not a firewall, and it should be placed behind an existing one if present.  The appliance is a pass-through device which can monitor and filter all Internet traffic flowing through it, based on the policies you define.
